Rod & Gun Club Lake, Sembach Air Base, Circa 1968

The R&G Lake was maintained and stocked by members of the R&G, on a volunteer basis. Maintenance funds were approved by the Board of Directors of the Club, and a Lake/Fishing Committee appointed. We stocked 2-300 kilos of rainbow trout every other Friday, weather permitting during the fishing season. We would close the lake on Friday, after stocking the fish, and then open the Lake on Saturday morning at sunrise. With a permit purchased from the Club, anglers were allowed to catch 5 trout per day. During the summer of 1967, algae and weeds had grown so thick in the Lake, that fishing was very difficult.

It was decided that we would close the inlet stream to the Lake, drain it as low as possible and apply a chemical that would remove the weeds and algae, and then refill it. It worked very well, and we were able to resume stocking and fishing a short time later. If a military member, or dependant, wanted to fish in a German Lake or stream, it was necessary to obtain a license from the R&G, after completing a German License Law and fish ID course that we had prepared.
